Information: Pay and Benefits

Salary

This is paid into your bank or building society account on the 20th of each month. It is reviewed annually taking account of national and/or provincial negotiations.

Pay Increments

Progression through the grade is by annual increments. This is not automatic and is determined through assessment of work performance and other business considerations.

Annual leave

The basic annual leave entitlement is 26 days (or pro-rata), although this increases to 28 or 33 days dependent upon grade. Additional days are granted for continued long service with this and other local authorities. The leave year runs from 1st April to 31st March the following year.

Hours of work

Jobs are based upon a 36-hour week, and most are open to job-sharing. Your manager will advise of any requirement to work in the evenings or at weekends, and any arrangements for varying working hours or flexible working.

Pension scheme

The Local Government Pension Scheme is a statutory funded pension scheme for council employees. You can decide whether to join the scheme or make other arrangements. The LGPS is widely considered to offer an excellent range of benefits, and has a basic contribution rate of 6% of pensionable pay.

Relocation and removal expenses

The payment of relocation and removal expenses may be considered for posts designated as “hard to fill”, where a national shortage exists for the specific occupation. Departmental chief officers determine eligibility for this scheme.

Work Life Balance

We recognise that people work best when they have a satisfactory balance between their paid work and the rest of their lives. With this in mind Southwark has introduced a series of procedures that support work life balance. The options include home working, career break, term time working, secondment, annualised hours and a compressed working week.

Our managers can explore how work-life balance could be introduced to benefit individual employees and overall service provision.

Other benefits that could be available according to your job with us include:

  • Car loans
  • Childcare vouchers
  • Gym membership
  • Health Insurance
  • Season ticket loans.
