About Southwark
Why the Campaign
The extensive and widespread recruitment campaign continues at Southwark Council as part of a bolstering of strength and capacity within the finance function. Duncan continues to build a team of dedicated long-term finance professionals who have the enthusiasm and willingness to embrace change, and ensure that each department is well-positioned to cope with the ambitious spending plans for the Borough.
About Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark is emerging to prominence as a centre of culture, investment, growth and change. It is a Borough of tremendous opportunity, situated with its northern boundaries opposite the prosperity of the Cities of London and Westminster, whilst to the South the green of Dulwich provides calm and tranquility as one of 130 parks and outdoor spaces. The Borough is blossoming into an area that challenges the cynical definition of inner London living; providing a perfect balance between employment opportunities and a quality of life.
Southwark is undergoing one of the most ambitious social and physical regeneration programme's of any authority in the country, together with a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving educational standards, reducing crime and improving health, housing and the environment. The beautiful redevelopment of the Southbank area has set a precedent for the standard of regeneration expected throughout the Borough, including the high profile redevelopment of the 170 acre Elephant & Castle site, at a cost of over £1.5bn. In fact, over forty percent of the Borough is currently planned for regeneration, meaning that over the coming years the London Borough of Southwark will continue to cement its place as a heart, beating stalwartly at the centre of our world renowned city.
Businesses based in the borough include the Pearsons group, which produces the Financial Times and the Daily Express, Lloyds TSB Bank, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG and MORI. The borough is also home to the new Mayor of London in an eye-catching new City Hall and has a flourishing small business sector, which will continue to draw affluence and entrepreneurs to rival those just a short trip across the water.
The Future of Southwark:
The ambition continues to be to achieve a significant and sustained improvement to the quality of life of our residents and to make Southwark a place in which people and businesses choose to be. Capital projects with a total value of over £5bn and the responsibility to regenerate and modernise a significant area of our capital city, means that the workforce accountable for this change will be cohesive, dedicated and well resourced. The agenda for achieving success will of course be demanding, but a great deal has been achieved in the past and Southwark is looking for driven and committed applicants to help them achieve even more in the future.
The Council’s accolade of ‘Most Improved Council of the Year’, Beacon status and its cutting edge advancement in a number of areas mean that the greatest challenge in the future, is to maintain this level of improvement and to continue to leap forward in the context of increasing demands of government and local service priorities.
